Washington, D.C. — Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. voted for a bill on May 31 to protect America from a debt default and halt a potential economic catastrophe. The bill, the Fiscal Responsibility Act (H.R. 3746), would allow the country to raise the debt ceiling for two years and continue to fund critical programs that benefit millions of Americans. It will protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid from cuts as well as fully fund health care for American veterans. It will continue to support food benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (or SNAP). In addition, it supports critical American investments in alternative energy, education, childcare, and student loan debt relief.
“This bill will allow America to pay its bills, save millions of jobs, and keep the economy running smoothly,” said Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. “It will continue to fund critical healthcare programs for seniors and veterans as well as support education and childcare to help working families. Also, it moves our country towards a clean energy economy and helps students pay their student loans. I applaud President Biden’s work to help millions of Americans and thank my Congressional colleagues who voted for this bill for doing the work of the American people.”
