Washington, D.C. — Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. voted against an immigration bill on May 11 that would reinstate the Trump Administration’s cruel practice of putting immigrant children in cages before they are deported. The bill, the Secure the Border Act of 2023 (H.R. 2), would construct an unnecessary wall across the country’s southern border, limit the ability of federal immigration authorities to process asylum-seeking immigrants, remove all protections for immigrant children, and allow immigrant children to be detained in federal facilities indefinitely.
“The MAGA Republicans continue their cruel and inhumane treatment of children with this extreme immigration and border enforcement bill,” said Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. “Americans were disgusted to see the pictures of young, immigrant children locked up in cages thanks to the policies of the previous administration. President Biden stopped that horrid practice and now MAGA Republicans want to bring it back. The declaration on the Statue of Liberty, the symbol of America, invites people from around the world to come to the United States and fulfill their dreams. But these anti-American, MAGA Republicans want to punish children so they can score cheap, political points with their declining base. They should be ashamed to introduce such a horrible bill.”
