Rutgers-Camden defeats NJCU women’s basketball team in conference matchup

The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women’s basketball team lost to Rutgers-Camden 82–62 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday, January 14, at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.

NJCU, now with a record of 5–7 overall and 3–5 in NJAC play, shot 32.8 percent from the field and made six of their seventeen three-point attempts. They converted just under seventy percent of their free throws. Rutgers-Camden improved to 8–7 overall and 5–3 in conference games, shooting slightly better from the field at 35.1 percent and making nine three-pointers.

Rutgers-Camden led statistically in several areas including points off turnovers (17–3), second-chance points (20–10), bench points (19–3), points in the paint (30–20), and fast-break points (13–3).

For NJCU, junior Na’tori Postell scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds. Sophomore Meghan Gentile also had 19 points along with five rebounds and two assists. Junior Bailey Cassell led the team with eight rebounds, adding four assists, three steals, and four points. Junior Autumn John contributed 14 points, seven rebounds, two blocks, and a steal.

Rutgers-Camden was led by Tamea El who finished with a double-double of 19 points and 19 rebounds. Courtney Edmundo also posted a double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds as well as seven assists. Gabriella Toledo and Zairra Galloway combined for an additional 23 points.

The Gothic Knights managed to cut the deficit to two near the middle of the first quarter but trailed after one period. The Scarlet Raptors extended their lead throughout the game; by halftime they were ahead by eleven at 31–20.

Postell started the third quarter strong for NJCU but Rutgers-Camden responded quickly to increase their advantage further. The visitors built up a lead that reached as much as twenty-nine during the fourth quarter before closing out with an eighty-two to sixty-two win.

NJCU will next face TCNJ in Ewing on Saturday, January 17 at 1:00 p.m.
