Rep. Rob Menendez, who represents New Jersey’s 8th district in the U.S. Congress, shared his views on public transit and environmental concerns through a series of tweets dated November 25, 2024. Menendez has been serving in Congress since 2023, succeeding Albio Sires. Born in Hudson County in 1985, he resides in Jersey City and holds degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Rutgers University-Newark.
In a tweet on November 25, Menendez emphasized the need for NJ Transit to be included in a revenue-sharing agreement with the MTA. He expressed concern that without such an arrangement, “NJ residents will be filling the MTA’s budget gaps,” which he deemed unfair. “But at a minimum, NJ Transit needs to be part of a revenue share with the MTA. Otherwise, NJ residents will be filling the MTA’s budget gaps, and that’s not right.”
On the same day, Menendez advocated for investment in an expanded public transit system to alleviate congestion. He proposed extending New York City’s Subway Line 7 into New Jersey as a transformative solution to reduce road traffic. He referenced a study commissioned by NYC supporting this plan’s potential impact. “To reduce congestion, we must invest in a more robust and interconnected public transit system… extend the NYC Subway’s 7 Line to NJ.”
Menendez also raised environmental concerns related to potential traffic shifts into New Jersey neighborhoods due to New York’s plans. He highlighted possible pollution increases affecting communities like those in his district while noting that New York’s mitigation efforts do not address impacts on New Jersey families facing similar issues. “Finally, the extent of environmental impact is unclear… could mean more pollution in our communities.”
