The New York Red Bulls defeated the Chicago Fire 3-1 at Soldier Field on May 14. Jorge Ruvalcaba, Cade Cowell, and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting each scored for New York.

The match saw New York open the scoring in the 45th minute when Emil Forsberg passed to Adri Mehmeti, who then found Jorge Ruvalcaba. Ruvalcaba cut inside and scored with a right-footed shot into the top left corner. This marked his fourth Major League Soccer goal of the season and his fourth in his last six appearances. His four goals this season are tied for third among MLS newcomers.

In the second half, Ronald Donkor advanced through midfield and set up Cade Cowell for a goal in the 49th minute. It was Cowell’s first goal for the Red Bulls. Later in the match, Mehmeti was fouled in the box by Chicago goalkeeper Chris Brady, resulting in a penalty kick that Choupo-Moting converted to extend New York’s lead to three goals.

Forsberg recorded his fourth assist of this MLS season and reached twenty assists with New York, becoming only the seventh player in franchise history to have both twenty or more goals and assists during their time with the club. Donkor also registered his fourth assist of this season and now has eight career assists; he has contributed to four goals over his last four matches. Voloder added his second assist of this MLS campaign as well.

Choupo-Moting’s goal was his second of this MLS season and nineteenth overall since joining Major League Soccer. Donkor, Mehmeti, and Forsberg are all tied for eighth place in assists within the Eastern Conference so far this year.

Goalkeeper Ethan Horvath made four saves during the match. The Red Bulls will return home for two games at Sports Illustrated Stadium starting with a fixture against Columbus Crew on Wednesday, May 13.
