During the first quarter of 2026, Optima Care Fountains was the largest nursing home in Hudson County, data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) shows.

The facility offered 334 beds, exceeding the Hudson County average by 173 beds in the first quarter of 2026. The center served an average of 277.2 residents during that time.

The CMS awarded Optima Care Fountains an overall rating of 1 out of 5, falling short of the 3.4 average rating seen among nursing homes statewide in New Jersey.

Hudsonview Health Care Center followed as the second-largest nursing facility with 273 beds, while Alaris Health at Hamilton Park was in third with 260 beds.

As of the first quarter of 2026, Optima Care Fountains had been assessed two fines totaling $60,823 and recorded two penalties.

Hudson County, New Jersey, was home to 13 for-profit nursing homes in total.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate that the country’s population of older adults is on the rise, while younger groups decline. From 2020 to 2024, Americans age 65 and older grew by 13%, and the under-18 population decreased by 1.7%. Over the last century, the older adult population has seen a significant increase, jumping from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.

A 2021 study reports that about half of people in this age range—around 28 million—are likely to need long-term services and support. The research also indicates that more than one-third could eventually require care in a nursing home.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education group. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
