The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women’s basketball team lost to Stony Brook University in a non-conference game on Monday, December 1. The final score was 85–38 at Stony Brook Arena.
NJCU, now with a record of 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC), made 30.4% of its shots from the field and went 4-for-14 from three-point range. The team was perfect at the free-throw line, making all six attempts. Stony Brook, which improved to 3-6, shot 50.7% from the floor and hit ten three-pointers. NJCU committed 24 turnovers, which led to 28 points for Stony Brook. The Seawolves also had a strong performance inside, outscoring NJCU 50-10 in points in the paint. Despite the loss, NJCU recorded more blocked shots than Stony Brook by a margin of six to two.
Sophomore guard Meghan Gentile led NJCU with 18 points on seven-of-16 shooting and made four three-pointers. She also collected five rebounds and one assist. Sophomore guard Kaylah Neal added ten points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. Junior forward Autumn John played all forty minutes for NJCU and contributed four rebounds, two steals, and two points from free throws. Junior guard Na’tori Postell and sophomore forward Dasani Talley Dorman combined for eight points; Postell also had two steals.
Stony Brook’s Diaka Berete scored a game-high 21 points along with six rebounds and three steals. Nal’la Bennett finished with eighteen points and four assists while Caitlin Frost nearly posted a double-double with ten points and nine rebounds.
Stony Brook took control early in the first quarter after back-to-back three-pointers by Berete gave them a double-digit lead midway through the period. By halftime, Stony Brook led by twenty-nine points after closing out the second quarter on an eight-point run.
In the third quarter, NJCU responded briefly with an eight-point run following turnovers by Stony Brook; Gentile scored eleven points during this period including consecutive threes. However, Stony Brook maintained their advantage going into the fourth quarter.
The final quarter saw limited scoring until Talley Dorman made NJCU’s first field goal of the frame with just over four minutes left to play.
NJCU will return home for its next game against Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday, December 3 at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.
