New Jersey City University’s women’s basketball team began its New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) season with a 51-42 victory over Ramapo College on Tuesday at the Bradley Center in Mahwah, New Jersey.
The Gothic Knights, now 2-2 overall and 1-0 in NJAC play, relied on strong defense and rebounding to secure the win. The team out-rebounded Ramapo 52-36, with Autumn John collecting a career-high 19 rebounds. Kaylah Neal contributed a career-best 15 points on efficient shooting and added seven rebounds. Meghan Gentile led NJCU in scoring with 17 points.
Ramapo, which fell to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play, was led by Jocelyn Juancaya’s 12 points and Lauren Flatt’s seven rebounds.
After trailing by one point at the end of the first quarter, NJCU’s defense limited Ramapo to just two points in the second quarter while scoring nine themselves to take a halftime lead. Bailey Cassell recorded seven points, eight rebounds, two steals, and a block. Isabel Gidado and Dasani Talley Dorman also provided key defensive contributions that disrupted Ramapo’s offense.
In the third quarter, Ramapo tied the game at 28 before NJCU regained control and built a six-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Gothic Knights extended their advantage to double digits late in the game with three-pointers from Gentile and Cassell. They held Ramapo without a field goal for the final three minutes to secure the win.
The Gothic Knights will next play Stony Brook on Monday, December 1 at 6:30 pm.
