The New Jersey City University (NJCU) softball team lost both games of a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader against Montclair State University on April 14. The Gothic Knights fell by scores of 10-0 in five innings and 10-2.
The results mark another setback for NJCU, which is now 3-23 overall and 1-11 in conference play. These losses highlight the challenges the team faces this season as they compete within the NJAC.
In the first game, NJCU managed only one hit, recorded by Kiara Taylor in the fourth inning. Montclair State used eight hits to score ten runs, ending the game early due to the mercy rule after five innings. Carlee Ionnone led Montclair’s offense with two hits, while Carly Mockenhaupt pitched a complete game with five strikeouts for the Red Hawks.
During game two, NJCU showed more offense by collecting eight hits and scoring twice. Emma Hanlon went two-for-three at bat, while Taylor contributed two hits as well. Maggie Martin drove in both runs for NJCU. However, Montclair responded with a season-high twenty hits and was led by Sophia Alonso’s perfect four-for-four performance at bat. Jordan Tarabokia earned her seventh win of the season with six strikeouts over seven innings.
Montclair scored three runs early in game two before Martin brought home Danika Borza for NJCU’s first run after Borza reached base on an error. The Gothic Knights scored again in the third inning but were unable to generate more offense as Montclair added six additional runs through the remainder of play.
