The New Jersey City University (NJCU) men’s soccer team lost 4-0 to Penn State-Abington on Wednesday, ending a four-game unbeaten streak. This match marked the first time the two programs have faced each other.
NJCU recorded 13 shots, with six on target. Augusto Vieira and Kevin Alves each had two shots on goal, while goalkeeper Camilo Pascual Verdu made five saves. Penn State-Abington, now 1-5-3 for the season, scored four times from 20 shots to secure their first win of the year. Temur Temirov led Penn State-Abington with two goals, one in each half.
Penn State-Abington took control early, registering five shots in the opening 20 minutes before Hugh Nungessor scored in the 24th minute with an assist from Frankie Rafferty. NJCU responded with three shots on goal but was unable to score as Penn State-Abington’s Brendan Werner made several key saves.
Temirov added a second goal for Penn State-Abington later in the first half. Just 44 seconds into the second half, they extended their lead to three goals. NJCU’s Gerard Bocanegra missed a chance early in the half, and further attempts by Jona Caballero and Bocanegra were also unsuccessful against Penn State-Abington’s defense. Temirov completed his brace in the 77th minute to seal the victory for Penn State-Abington.
NJCU was unable to find a goal despite late efforts and will look ahead to their next match against Montclair State on Saturday, September 27 at 1:00 pm for their New Jersey Athletic Conference opener.
