NJCU men’s soccer falls to #10 Rowan University in first NJAC loss

The New Jersey City University (NJCU) men’s soccer team lost its first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match of the season, falling 3-0 to Rowan University on Wednesday evening in Glassboro, New Jersey.

NJCU, now with a record of 4-6-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play, managed four shots during the game, three of which were on target. Goalkeeper Camilo Pascual Verdu recorded five saves for NJCU, with four coming in the second half. Rowan University improved to 8-2-1 overall and also holds a 1-1 conference record. The Rowan Ospreys took 17 shots and scored three goals while leading NJCU in corner kicks by a margin of 6-2.

Rowan applied pressure early, taking four shots within the first 18 minutes. This effort resulted in Johnny Troiano scoring off a pass from Jason Barragan in the 19th minute to give Rowan a 1-0 lead. Franck Onguene added another goal for Rowan eighteen minutes later, putting them ahead 2-0 at halftime.

In the second half, NJCU challenged Rowan’s goalkeeper CJ Norton twice. Javier Pena and Augusto Vieira each had shots saved by Norton. Troiano scored his second goal later in the match to extend Rowan’s lead to 3-0. NJCU was unable to generate further chances as they experienced their first conference defeat this season.

The Gothic Knights will next play against Stockton University on Saturday, October 4 at Galloway, New Jersey.
