The New Jersey City University (NJCU) men’s basketball team continued its strong start in conference play by defeating Stockton University 73-64 at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on Wednesday, Dec. 10.
With this win, the Gothic Knights improved their record to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC), extending their conference winning streak to four games. The team shot 45 percent from the field and nearly 39 percent from three-point range. NJCU also capitalized on turnovers, outscoring Stockton 29-14 in points off turnovers and held a significant advantage in second-chance points with a 17-6 margin.
Senior Bakhi Rogers-Robinson led NJCU with 21 points, three rebounds, three steals, and an assist. Junior Brince Shelton contributed 11 points in just 15 minutes of action. Senior Arterio Williams collected eight rebounds along with four points and two assists, while senior Raymond Ezike had seven rebounds, three blocks, a steal, and two points.
Stockton’s Eriq Campbell led all scorers with 24 points on efficient shooting, adding three steals and two rebounds. Tayvon Gaither added 12 points for Stockton while Devon Johnson grabbed seven rebounds.
The game saw early momentum swing toward NJCU after Shelton tied it at 8-8 with a three-pointer that started a decisive 19-0 run for the Gothic Knights. Jayden Brown scored all seven of his points during this stretch as NJCU built a lead that reached as high as sixteen before halftime. Stockton narrowed the gap late in the first half but trailed by seven at intermission.
In the second half, Stockton made several pushes to get back into contention. Campbell hit a key three-pointer early to close within six before Rogers-Robinson answered for NJCU with consecutive baskets to restore a double-digit cushion. Stockton responded again but could not overtake NJCU down the stretch despite forcing missed free throws after technical fouls were assessed against them late in the game.
NJCU will next travel to Union, N.J., for an NJAC matchup against Kean University scheduled for Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
