NJCU baseball falls to Gettysburg College in season opener

The New Jersey City University (NJCU) baseball team began its 2026 season with a loss to Gettysburg College, falling 20-3 at Patriots Park North in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

NJCU recorded four hits and committed four errors during the game. Mike Novak went 1-for-2 with one RBI. Teammates Daniel Kapsch, Nick Vaughn, and Jeremy Ricourt each contributed a hit. Starting pitcher Andre Dean threw 43 pitches in one inning, striking out three batters and allowing three earned runs.

Gettysburg improved to 5-0 for the season by collecting 12 hits and scoring 20 runs while making two errors defensively. Dominick Balsamo led Gettysburg’s offense with two hits in four at-bats and four RBIs. Henry Smith added three hits, two RBIs, and drew two walks. Pitcher John Francesconi earned the win after five innings of work, recording four strikeouts and giving up just two hits.

Gettysburg established an early lead by scoring four runs in the first inning and extended their advantage over the next several frames. Balsamo hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to make it 11-0.

NJCU scored its first run in the sixth when Johnovan Rodriguez was walked home; another walk brought Novak across the plate for an RBI. Gettysburg responded with six runs in the seventh inning and added three more in the eighth. Nicholas Diadema drove in a run for NJCU during the eighth inning but NJCU was unable to mount a comeback.

The Gothic Knights will play Hood College and Wilson College on Sunday, March 1 at 10:00 am and 2:30 pm.
