Julian Hall scored two goals as Red Bull New York defeated Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, 3-1, in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, according to an April 19 announcement from the club. Emil Forsberg also contributed with a free kick goal during the match.
The win allows Red Bull New York to move forward to the Round of 16, where they will face New York City Football Club at Sports Illustrated Stadium on a date and time yet to be determined. This victory continues the team’s strong performance in the tournament and extends their unbeaten home streak in U.S. Open Cup play to 15 matches with an 11-0-4 record.
Hall’s two goals marked his first and second career goals in this competition and bring his total for the season across all competitions to seven. He has also achieved six goal contributions over his last four appearances. Head Coach Michael Bradley earned his first win in this tournament as a coach and praised Hall’s impact: “He’s been a really, really important player for us,” Bradley said. “Many of you guys have heard me say it: It’s not just the goals, his ability to lead our press, to set the tone for everybody in terms of how aggressive we can be to step up and go after the other team… Those things go unnoticed.” The club noted that Hall is an 18-year-old native of Manhattan who has now recorded his second brace of the season across all competitions.
Forsberg’s goal was his second from a free kick this season and marked both his second career Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup goal and second overall goal this year. He also registered his second assist of the season during this match.
Goalkeeper John McCarthy extended his own unbeaten streak in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play to eleven matches (7-0-4). Looking ahead, Head Coach Bradley commented on facing their city rivals: “We are really excited,” Bradley said “Obviously, I’ve watched the New York Derby from afar… I think it speaks for itself in terms of the two clubs and everything that it means when two teams in the same city now play… we’re going to be really excited.” The exact date and time for that derby match will be confirmed by U.S. Soccer at a later date.
Red Bull New York is scheduled next to play CF Montreal at Stade Saputo on Saturday, April 18 at 2:30 p.m., with coverage available on Apple TV and Red Bulls Radio.
