Bergen New Bridge Medical Center recorded the largest nursing home capacity in Bergen County in the first quarter of 2026, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported.

Records indicate the medical center maintained 574 available beds, which exceeded the Bergen County average by 403 beds at the start of 2026. The facility provided care for an average of 357.1 residents during this quarter.

The CMS assigned Bergen New Bridge Medical Center an overall rating of 5 out of 5, above the New Jersey nursing home average rating of 3.4.

Within the same quarter, New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home at Paramus was the county’s second largest facility, with 336 beds, while Christian Health Care Center ranked third with 304 beds available.

Bergen New Bridge Medical Center reported no incidents resulting in fines or penalties during the first quarter of 2026.

Bergen County was home to four non-profit nursing homes as of the first quarter of 2026.

Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show that the U.S. population of older adults continues to rise, whereas numbers in younger groups are shrinking. The American 65-and-older age group expanded by 13% from 2020 to 2024, while the population under 18 declined by 1.7%. The nation’s older adult population increased dramatically over the last century, growing from 4.9 million in 1920 to beyond 61 million in 2024.

A 2021 study found that nearly half of Americans age 65 and older—about 28 million people—may need long-term services and support. Projections indicate more than one-third of them may ultimately require nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
